How to renew a passport in India?

Passport is one of the most important ID and address proof and it is considered as one of the documents required to apply for a PAN card number. So is your old passport expired? Then need not worry as the Passport Authority of India has devised a convenient way of getting a passport renewed/reissued in a very short time.

The renewal period for a passport is one year in advance from the expiry date of the passport or within three years after expiry. Here is how one can get a passport reissued at the earliest.

1.      An application form has to be filled, which is the same form required for a new passport. The form can be availed from the passport office or passport service center or a post office. These centers are available in every city for a person’s convenience.

The forms can also be filled up online at the passport websites or at the centers of the passport authority of India.

2.      A fee has to be paid for the application of the form. The fee for a 36 page form is Rs.1000 for an adult and Rs.1500 for a 60 page form. The application fee for a minor is Rs.600.

3.      The application form has to be submitted along with the required documents at the Passport Offices, District Passport Cells/ Collector’s Office or DSP’s Office or at Speed Post Offices.

Documents required along with the Form:
·        Original old passport.

·        A self-attested photo copy of the passport.

·       If the passport issued does not have an ECNR stamp then 10th certificate or degree certificate will have to be submitted.

·       Address proof if the address is not the same as mentioned in the old passport. The address proof can be any document which holds the proof of the person staying at that address. It can be an electricity bill, or a phone bill, or a bank passbook, or any other document.

·       Three passport size colored-photographs of the candidate’s front view. The facial features will have to be clear in the photograph.

It must be taken into consideration that a person if has been residing in different places in the past one year, then a separate form will have to be filled. The person will have to fill a Persons Particulars Form along with the Passport Application form.

A passport is generally reissued under the following circumstances. These are:

·        If a person’s old passport has expired.

·      If a person has lost his passport. In such a case, a person will have to file a police complaint, an FIR. A copy of the FIR will have to be submitted along with the passport application form to the authority concerned.

·        If the passport has been stolen.

·       Change of name, passport number, marital status or a person moving to a new place permanently.

If a passport has to be reissued in the case of an emergency, then one can apply under the Tatkal scheme. The cost of the form under Tatkal scheme is Rs. 2500 and takes around a week or so for its renewal. Also, one can save time on police verification.

Also, if a person wants to extend the validity of a passport, say from five years to ten years, he/she can get it renewed. The process will not require any extra payment and is free.

Overall, the procedure to reissue a passport needs careful attention and a little patience. It normally takes around a month to get a passport reissued. The passport offices act as a governing body and help the candidates through their help line numbers.

The website of these offices is also equipped with adequate information and offers the visitors a detailed overview of the application process, thereby saving time and energy that goes into fetching a form.
